Empowering minds, expanding horizons

Providing knowledge, skills and values to individuals regardless of their formal educational background

Non-formal education is a type of education that takes place outside of the traditional classroom setting.

It encompasses a wide range of educational activities, including community education, vocational training, and self-directed learning. One of the key characteristics of non-formal education is that it is often tailored to the specific needs and interests of the learners.

It is not constrained by a fixed curriculum or standardized testing, and instead focuses on providing learners with the skills and knowledge they need to achieve their goals. There are many different methods used in non-formal education, but some of the most popular include:

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a form of non-formal education that involve on-the-job training. They are often used in vocational fields such as construction, manufacturing, and healthcare. Apprenticeships provide learners with hands-on experience and the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals.

Community education

Community education is a form of non-formal education that takes place in local communities. It is often focused on providing learners with the skills and knowledge they need to improve their lives, such as financial literacy, parenting skills, and computer skills. Community education programs are often run by non-profit organizations, community centers, and local governments.

Self-directed learning

Self-directed learning is a form of non-formal education that allows learners to take control of their own learning process. This can include reading books, watching online tutorials, and engaging in other forms of self-directed research. It is often used by people who want to learn a new skill or acquire knowledge on their own terms.

Online learning

Online learning is a form of non-formal education that takes place over the internet. It offers learners a flexible and accessible way to acquire knowledge and skills from anywhere. From online courses and webinars to e-books and discussion forums, there are many different ways to engage in online learning.

Experiential learning

Experiential learning is a form of non-formal education that focuses on learning through experience. This can include outdoor education, travel, and service learning. Experiential learning can be a powerful way to develop new skills and knowledge, and to gain a deeper understanding of the world around us.

One way to participate in nonf-formal education is through Erasmus+. Non-formal learning through Erasmus is an opportunity for individuals to participate in educational activities, such as youth exchanges, volunteer service, and training courses, through the Erasmus+ program, which provides funding and support for individuals to gain new skills, perspectives and intercultural understanding in a non-formal learning setting
